There was confusion at the Edo State House of Assembly on Tuesday as nine lawmakers of the People’s Democratic Party,PDP, announced the suspension of the Speaker of the Assembly,Hon Uyi Igbe and six principal officers.
The drama, it was gathered started early in the morning as the lawmakers stormed the Assembly complex and hurriedly broke into the hallowed chamber which was under lock and key.
Led by Hon Festus Ebea, the nine lawmakers it was further gathered within about five minutes moved a motion and adopted the suspension of the Speaker and the six principal officers in the absence of the maze.
Hon Ebea along with the five had on Monday been suspended on the floor of the same House of Assembly.
But on Tuesday the matter took a new twist for the worst as the Speaker on hearing of the development summoned the All Progressives Congress APC members and rushed to the Assembly where they engaged the Ebea led group in a free for all.
Security agents it was gathered had to intervene and fired their gun into the air and equally used tear gas to disperse party thugs at the scene who made frantic efforts to hijack the situation to enter the Assembly complex chamber.
Earlier on the same Tuesday,a group of PDP supporters had stormed the Nigerian Union of Journalists Press Centre in Benin to protest against the Monday suspension by the House of Assembly of the Deputy Speaker ,Hon Festus Ebea.
They had described the House action as an infringement of the lawmakers constitutional rights.
It would be recalled that the Edo State governor ,Comrade Adams Oshiomhole ,also a member of the APC, had said last week that some lawmakers in the Edo State House of Assembly had received huge sums of money from Abuja to ensure that the Speaker was removed.
Meanwhile heavy security by the police, SSS and men of the civil defense corp is being mounted at the House of Assembly Complex.
As at the time of this report there is no comment from the Edo state Government on the incidents in the Assembly.
