Ondo Governorship Election : INEC declares Akeredolu winner, Nigerians react.

The governorship election in Ondo State was held on Saturday November 26 with the Independent National Electoral Commission declaring Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu as the winner on Sunday having polled 244,458 votes.

Barrister Akeredolu who contested the polls under the All Progressives Congress(APC) defeated Mr Eyitayo Jegede of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 150,380 votes and Alliance for Democracy(AD) candidate, Olusola Oke, received 126,889 votes.

Declaring the result on Sunday at INEC Head office in Akure, the Returning Officer for the November 26 Election, Prof Abdul Ganiyu Ambali, Vice Chancellor University of Ilorin said Akeredolu scored the highest votes cast.

Responding, Mr Akeredolu, the Governor elect in an acceptance speech thanked all those who voted for him irrespective of their location within the state ,promising that he would run a purposeful government that will erase ethnicity among the people.

The Governor elect said he was humbled by the votes of the people across the length and breadth of Ondo State Akeredolu dedicated his victory to God and said it reflected the need for the people for quality leadership.

He commended President Muhammadu Buhari, APC National Chairman, Chief John Oyegun and the party’s National Working Committee for their unrelenting support. “I wish to express my profound gratitude, first, to the Almighty God whose infinite grace has allowed us to see this day.

“This victory is of God through the people. It is not for me or the APC alone, it is also a victory for the people of Ondo state, irrespective of which side of the divide you stood during the election. “For me, it is a challenge to perform; it is a call to rescue our state and reverse its fortunes. “I thank the people of my dear state for their steadfastness. “I have heard their messages throughout the campaign to all the nooks and crannies of the state. Today, you have spoken with one voice. “You have walked your talk.

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the Governor-Elect of Ondo State, Chief Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on his victory in the governorship election in the state.

In a statement by his spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina on Sunday, President Buhari also congratulated the Chairman of the APC, Chief John Oyegun, the Chairman of the Campaign Committee, Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State, and all party faithful” who put in their best and braved the odds to ensure a successful outing for the flag bearer.”
The statement added that “the President rejoiced with the good people of Ondo State, who aligned with his own belief that Chief Rotimi Akeredolu, with his pedigree, possesses the qualities to transform the state into the Ondo of their dreams.

“From the beginning, this election set out to be a different kind of election. The unity and resilience of the party was tested. I am happy we came out of this victorious. “This is a huge win. The mood today is against corruption, insecurity and for the restoration of the economy and the creation of jobs. This is where the party stands and I am happy that the electorate has read the situation correctly,” the President said.

President Buhari called on other contestants in the election to see the triumph of Chief Akeredolu as the wish of God and enjoined them to work together with him to make the state a truly progressive and economically prosperous one for all.

The President also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Security Agencies and the voters for the peaceful and successful conduct of the elections. “As the Governor-elect prepares to assemble his team, and bring the much desired change to the people, President Buhari urges him to put behind whatever acrimonies may have arisen from the electioneering process, and reach out to all well-meaning people in the state and beyond, to implement his vision”, he said.

The President also assured Nigerians that the APC-led administration under his watch is committed to playing by the rules, and there will be no let-up “until we see the great nation of our dreams in all spheres of national development.

Tinubu in a congratulatory statement he personally signed and made available to newsmen said that the time has come for all the aggrieved members of the APC to come together saying that “I appeal to all party members including those who have been disaffected from the primary until today to come together for the good of our party and it’s progressive ideals.”

He also hailed President Muhammadu Buhari, John Oyegun the national leader of the party, saying his stature and dignity has helped to guide ‘the APC to another victory that should advance the progressive aims of the party and the people.’ The statement reads in part “ I extend congratulations to Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN on the outcome of the election and for his perseverance and persistence in seeking that office,” .

Akeredolu’s victory shows Nigerians still love APC- Dogara.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara,in a statement by his special adviser on media and public affairs, Turaki Hassan on Sunday, said the victory of the All Progressives Congress standard-bearer, Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN at the Ondo State governorship poll is a proof that the APC is still popular among Nigerians.

Dogara declared “I would like to congratulate my learned colleague on his victory at the poll, and also commend our great party, the All Progressives Congress, for a thorough and successful campaign.” He urged all stakeholders to come together and ensure that the incoming APC government in Ondo delivers on the mandate given by the people in line with the party’s manifesto. “As a party, we must take our victory in Ondo seriously since the people have placed enormous trust in us,” he said.

“We must, therefore, deliver on policies that will improve their standard of living.” Dogara, who commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies for “ensuring a hitch-free exercise,” also praised the people of Ondo state for “keeping the election process peaceful and coming out to perform their civic duty”.

Governor. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, in his congratulatory message issued on his behalf by Mallam Imam Imam on Sunday advised the Governor-elect of Ondo State, Mr Rotimi Akeredole to be a father to all.

He said that Akeredolu must become a father-figure to all irrespective of political differences. Tambuwal added that the onus lies on the governor-elect and the political class in the state to work together to propel the state to growth and development.

“At the risk of sounding repetitive, let me reiterate what I have always said that there is time for everything. There is time for politicking and time for governance. “Now that politicking is over in Ondo, I urge all stakeholders to tailor their energy towards ensuring a successful transition leading to the swearing-in of Mr Rotimi Akeredolu as the new Governor of Ondo State.”

Tambuwal also urged members of the opposition to rally round the governor-elect, to emsure peace and sustainable development in the state.
He also congratulated the All Progressives Congress for the victory and praised the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies for ensuring free, fair, credible and peaceful election.

Akeredolu will wipe away the tears of Ondo- Saraki

President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki has congratulated the Governor-elect of Ondo State, Chief Rotimi Akerodolu over his victory at the poll.

Saraki in a statement by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity Mr Yusuph Olaniyonu, in Abuja on Sunday, said the people of Ondo state “could not have had a better choice.’’ Saraki said Akeredolu’s victory did not come to him as a surprise, going by his excellent credentials and years of preparedness for the business of governance.

He, however, urged the governor-elect to be magnanimous in victory by working with all relevant stakeholders in the arduous task of moving the Sunshine State to the next level. He urged Akeredolu to fully deploy his wealth of experience garnered over many years in private legal practice in running the affairs of the state.

Saraki said: “The people of Ondo have made a clear choice by voting for the APC. I can only assure the good people of Ondo state that APC and its flag bearer have all it takes to wipe away your tears. ‘’Akeredolu will provide you the dividends of democracy that have hitherto eluded you. “With Akeredolu on the saddle of governance, I have no doubt that the state will soon witness unparalleled development socially, economically and politically.’’

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari, the APC and the people of Ondo State for the outcome of the election.

The Governor specially congratulated Akeredolu for his hard fought victory and wished him well as he prepares to take the mantle of leadership of the State.

He also urged the Ondo Governor-Elect to use his tenure to forge ahead with the quest to unite the Yoruba nation especially through regional integration and economic transformation of the South-West geo-political zone.
