Minister appeals for sacrifice from Poly union leaders to end 5months oldend strike

Supervising Minister of Education,Mr Nyesor Wike has called on Provosts of Colleges of Education to appeal to the union leaders in their institutions to make sacrifices in the ongoing impasse between government and ASSUP which had led to strike in Polytechnics and Colleges of Education since December 2013.
The Minister made the plea on friday in Abuja while receiving in audience a delegation of Provosts of Colleges of Education who came to brief him on latest happenings in their institutions.
Wike reiterated the federal governments commitment to resolve all issues in the education sector, but reminded them of the need for them to always be aware that it was not possible for the government to meet all their needs at once.
He said government could not compromise the future of education hence it had been making concerted efforts through funding and policy formulation for the sector.
He pointed out that the government had in fact met some of the demands of their union including the constitution of the Governing councils and the needs assessment committees for the institutions.
Earlier, the spokesperson for the Provosts, Dr Nwanze told the Minister that the prolonged strike had made their lives to be under threat by the day. He said the students had become restive with the implications of the strike telling on the students. The union are among other things demanding for the implementation of recommendation of a white paper on the institutions.
