Ekiti Govt empowers 48 Farmers Coop Societies with N60million

Forty eight farmers Cooperative Societies in Ekiti State have received cheques worth N60 million as empowerment from the loan support scheme of the State Government.

The loan is meant to enhance commercial farming and boost food production across the State.

The initiative is part of the government proposed N600million commercial farmers driven intervention programme in Ekiti State.

Aside the loan, farm implements and fertilizers will also be made available to peasant farmers with a view to achieving various agricultural development programmes of government.

Speaking on the loan ,the state chairman of Farmers Association of Nigeria ,Mr Ademola Okeya stated that such initiative for farmers was key to drive the economic base of Ekiti State.

Okeya expressed the resolve of the farmers in the State to put aside whatever differences existing amongst them and concentrate more to make Ekiti to become the food basket of the nation.

He said commercial farming agricultural programme would place Ekiti State in the forefront of agricultural rebirth in the south west of Nigeria.

Earlier, the Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi told the farmers that the government gesture was conceived to overcome the scarcity of food production in the State.

The governor cautioned the farmers to make good and judicious use of the loan as the government was poised to strengthen its existing institutions to ensure a better future for the state.

Motorcycles were also distributed at the event to agric extension workers to strengthen training and effective monitoring of peasant farmers in different parts of the State.
