About 59 people suspected to have had contact with late Liberian citizen, Patrick Sawyer who died of Ebola virus in Lagos State last week have been placed under close surveillance.

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris made this disclosure while briefing the media on the steps taken by the state government to disallow the virus from spreading.

Dr Idris assured residents of Lagos that there was no cause for alarm over the matter as the government was taking every necessary precaution.

He however lamented that the manifest of the airline that brought the dead victim of the virus to Nigeria has not been provided and the precise number of passengers is yet to be ascertained.

Ebola has so far killed 672 people in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea since it was first diagnosed in February this year.

World Health Organisation ,WHO, said in a statement that the plane that carried late Sawyer had a stop over in Lome ,Togo enroute Lagos.

Spokesman for WHO, Paul Garwood stated that the organization is sending teams to Nigeria and Togo on a follow-up mission in regards to contact tracing especially aboard the flight that Sawyer traveled on.

Nigeria had placed its seaports, land borders and airports on “red alert” since the Friday Sawyers case was discovered.
