Nigerians have been told to cultivate the habit of regarding the rights of animals.
Making the call at a ceremony to mark this years World Veterinary Day slated for April 26 every year, a lead guest speaker ,Dr Nora Davies from US Center for Diseases Control said people needed to be empathetic towards animals.
She lamented that most often people feel more for each other as human beings but urged that they should look outward to animals because “animals too feel pain”
“How would you like it, if somebody came to you and kick you across the road, it hurts you know” she exclaimed.
Also speaking on this years theme”Empowering tools for veterinarians in the field for animal welfare” a former director of livestock and pest control, Dr Junaidu Maina said there was need for some of the major problems confronting the livestock industry to be addressed in a bid to meet up with this years theme,
Maina noted with nostalgia that the problem of disregard accorded animals had degenerated to a serious level within our society to the extent that even the welfare of owners of such animals are equally being disregarded.
He agreed that even history tells and proves to us the need for us to regard the welfare of animals.
The World Veterinary Day is a day set aside to deliberate on the importance of animals to human existence.
