Nine lawyers have had their names submitted by the Nigerian Bar Association to the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, as nominees for appointment to the Supreme Court bench.
The names submission followed the discussion during a courtesy visit by an NBA entourage led by its President, Mr. Abubakar Mahmoud, to the Acting CJN on January 18.
According to the NBA, six Senior Advocates of Nigeria and three other lawyers made the list.
The nominees who were called to the bar between 1978 and 1988, are a former President of the N, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, (Anambra), Anthony Idigbe,(SAN)(Delta);former Attorney General of Abia State, Chief Awa Kalu (SAN) (Abia); Babatunde Fagbohunlu, (SAN) (Ondo) ; Miannayaaja Essien, (SAN) (Rivers)and Yunus Ustas Usman(SAN) Kogi.
Others are Tajudeen Oladoja, (Kwara) and Ayuba Giwa, (Edo) and Awalu H Yadudu( Kano).
On the whole, 89 candidates were said to have submitted Expression of Interest Forms to the NBA.
“Most successful lawyers had in the past turned down judiciary appointments,while
those who want to come to the bench are expected to be driven by service and passion for judicial duties.”
It is expected that the Acting CJN will further send a shortlist of the nominees to the Federal Judicial Service, which will subject them to the appointment procedures.
After concluding its process, the FJSC will send a further shortlist to the National Judicial Council to conclude the appointment procedure by sending the successful candidates to the President.
