Police have confirmed 21 people dead, 17 others injured and about 17 cars burnt as a bomb blast rocked Abuja,capital of Nigeria at about 4pm on Wednesday.

The bomb blast occurred at a road corridor leading to a popular shopping mall, EMAB Shopping Plaza ,situated along Aminu Kano Crescent in Wuse 2 in Abuja.

Security agencies are yet to ascertain the mode of the attack as at the time of this report.

Police spokesman ,Frank Mba who arrived the scene shortly after the incident while speaking to journalist said ,”the most important assignment we have is to secure lives, secure the crime scene”

The National Emergency Management Agency,NEMA, in a statement issued by its Senior Information officer, Sani Datti said “following the explosion which took place at around 4pm at a plaza in Wuse2 Abuja,all the affected persons at the location have been evacuated to various hospitals”.

The statement said that the evacuation was carried out by emergency agencies that responded immediately to the alerts.

It confirmed that the victims were taken to Maitama General Hospital. National Hospital, Alliance Clinic,Asokoro General Hospital.

Meanwhile ,the Minister for the Federal Capital Territory,FCT, Senator Bala Mohammed has visited the scene of the bomb blast and the Maitama hospital where many of the injured persons were rushed to for treatment.

The FCT Minister condemned the dastardly act of the perpetrators of the bomb attack and gave an assurance that the FCT administration would pay for the treatment bills of the victims of the bomb attack.

He called on residents of the territory to continue to be extra vigilant with a promise that security agencies would continue to put in their best to make life safe for the people
